What Really Works To Build Muscle

Not a week
goes by when I don't get a question about which training program, diet, supplement, or drug
works for building muscle.
I wish it were that
simple.
I've seen people build muscle doing 20 sets
of 12 reps per body part twice a week.
I've seen people build muscle on
2 sets per body part done every 10 to 14 days.
I've seen people build impressive
physiques while eating the crappiest of diets.
But everybody wants to know if
________ (insert whatever training program, diet, supplement or drug you
want in the blank) will work for them.
The best answer I've
ever heard for this came from pro bodybuilder Mike Matarazzo. (Forgive me if
I've spelled that wrong!)
He said, "Everything works, but
nothing works all the time."
I wish I would have thought of
that! Truer words could not have been spoken.
Different things work for different people. But after a
while you have to change things up to continue to progress. Nothing works
all the time.
You need to switch to different
training routines when you've gone stale on your current one.
You need to change your diet up
every now and then and see how your body responds.
You may need to experiment with
different supplements to see which ones work for you. Or you might just
want to use food and not even mess with supplements. That works,
too!
There are only two things that I
can guarantee will work all the time...weight training and eating
sufficient protein and calories.
As long as your training is
progressive in some way or another (consistently using heavier weights,
doing more reps with the same weight, etc.) and you're eating enough
protein and calories to support muscle growth, this combination will
always work.
It may take some experimentation
to find what kind of training works best for you and what kind of eating
plan your body responds to, but these two things are 95% of the whole
picture.
If you don't get your training and diet dialed in, everything else
is just fluff.
If you're training half-assed and
eating like a girly man, don't expect much from your $200 a month
supplement habit.
