There are only a few supplements that actually work.
Most, unfortunately, do not.
The supplements on this page are ones that I've personally used to pack on 18 pounds of muscle, get down to 5% body fat, and get in the best shape of my life.
During the time I've been training and competing in natural bodybuilding competitions, the most productive supplements I've taken have some from AST Sports Science.
And in that time, I'm proud to say that I achieved more results, in 9 weeks, then I did the previous 9 years!
In my opinion, AST Sports Science produces the highest quality, best supplements you can possibly buy.
And most importantly, they've produced the most results out of any supplements I've ever used. They gave me more strength and energy and also helped me increase my training focus and intensity.
Simply put, they work.
So that's why I use them exclusively now and also refer all of my personal training clients to them.
And if you have any questions on the best way to use these supplements, you can check out my supplement timing article that will help you get the best use of your supplements.
Here Are The Only 9 Supplements
I Personally Use and Recommend To Clients!
I've listed them in order of importance...
The perfect blend of protein, carbs, and vitamins/minerals, in an easy-to-use shake. When you can't eat a whole food meal, this is a god-send!
Protein builds muscle. Nothing else does. In fact, muscle tissue is made of protein and water. If you don't get enough protein, you will NOT build muscle. Whey protein is used better by the body than any other form of protein.
is used to increase muscle size, strength, and volume. The best strength and power builder on the market.
Helps to build muscle, increase strength, and increase growth hormone production. One of the best products to use to prevent overtraining!
Gives your body the nutrients it needs to stay strong. Just the right amounts for optimal muscle recovery and growth.
Vyo Pro Protein Bars
The Vyo-Pro High-Performance Protein Bar is a rich and tasty bar that supplies 20 grams of nitrogen-rich protein in a soft and chewy 2.2 ounce bar that's the perfect power food for fueling hungry muscles.
Fat Burners/ Energy Enhancers
Too tired for your workout, or just to get through the workday? Check out Dymetadrine Extreme energy enhancer.
Helps to build muscle, increase strength, and increase growth hormone production. Helps to naturally increase testosterone production.
Lean Muscle Weight Gainer
Muscle-XGF is a potent mass gaining formula designed for solid lean muscle growth without fat gain.
In more detail, here are the supplements I have taken and feel are worth using:
Meal replacements are by far one of the supplements with the greatest value. We know that we must eat often, about every 3-4 hours, to keep our metabolisms' operating efficiently to burn fat.
That's hard to do with whole food, unless you have a personal chef available. They are low in fat and very high in protein. They can be taken anywhere and are very convenient.
Protein is the major nutrient responsible for muscle growth and repair. Weight training athletes require more protein than does a sedentary person. Protein builds muscle. In fact, protein should be the number one nutritional concern for people working out.
Some of the protein sources I recommend are whey protein, milk protein, egg, protein, and soy protein. I think whey protein is the best because the body utilizes it better than the other sources.
--Without a doubt, this one works. This is a must-use supplement for gaining strength, muscle size, and endurance.
Creatine is a compound that is naturally made in our bodies to supply energy to muscles. We just make very little of it and get very little from whole foods. It is used in the body to produce ATP. Creatine will increase muscle fiber size, strength and overall power. It does this primarily by shuttling water into the muscle cells, forcing the body to hold water intramuscularly (within the muscle), not directly under the skin.
Creatine works and is a very safe supplement. I would include it as a very inexpensive, very effective tool in your arsenal.
--- Glutamine is used by the body to help in the recovery process after strenuous weight training and/or cardio. Glutamine is the most abundant single amino acid in muscle tissue.
The higher the muscle glutamine levels you can maintain, the less chance you have of falling into muscle tissue breakdown.
I have used and like: AST GL3 Micronized Glutamine.
Vyo Pro Protein Bars
---along the same lines as meal replacements, protein bars are convenient and healthy snacks you can eat that will tide you over until you can eat a regular meal. Some are made big enough where they are supposed to take the place of a meal. Very convenient supplements.
I like AST's Vyo Pro bars.
--- Although not a typical weight gain supplement, taking a vitamin each day, will ensure you a complete spectrum of all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to carry out the many functions your body goes through each day.
Lean Muscle Weight Gainers
Weight Gainers----If you're one of those people who just can't gain weight, try a weight gainer to add extra calories to your daily diet.
Back in the day, weight gainers used to be fairly cheap protein powders loaded with sugar and fat to up the calorie content.
The serving size would be something like 128 oz. and the serving would contain 3000 calories.
Not exactly a practical serving size, and all that sugar kind of went against the idea of eating clean.
Plus, the quality of the protein in the gainer was usually poor. Although many gainers like this still remain on the market, fortunately, the weight gain supplement industry has come a long way.
Fat Burners/ Energy Enhancers
----This is probably the most controversial supplement on the market, but it should not be. It's based upon the fallacy that ephedra causes health problems.
However, anybody willing to spend some time doing scientific research on ephedra will learn that you are more likely to die from aspirin than you are ephedra. Ephedra has been around for 5,000 years and has had a very safe track record. The problem occurs when people abuse it, thinking that taking more will increase its effects.
I think the value lies more in the energy these products give you so that you will be more likely to go to the gym in the first place and, while there, have a much more intense and energetic workout.
Although I am not endorsing people to use this product, I think the bad rap its received is unfounded.
I've used several of these products and they all are pretty similar. They even are making fat-burners now that are ephedra free. The ones I have tried are:
AST Dymetadrine Extreme is my favorite fat burner and energy enhancer.
DHEA is an acronym for the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone>
It's the most plentiful androgenic hormone produced by the adrenal glands and it is quite important to body builders and athletes because in men, around 50% of all testosterone is derived from it, while women derive over 75% of their estrogen from it and nearly 100% after menopause.
Levels of DHEA are quite high at birth, drop during childhood, and peak during young adulthood. The levels continue to drop throughout life. This hormone is available synthetically as a nutritional supplement.
As a pre-cursor hormone, as it leads to the production of other hormones. It has been shown to help people lose weight, burn fat and build muscle, and increase sex drive.
Dietary supplements of DHEA can help maintain proper levels in the body and can aid a person in their overall well being. University of California, San Francisco researchers found that DHEA levels are lower in people who are depressed, and supplements of 30-90mg per day reportedly improved their state.
I've used AST DHEA exclusively for the past 7 years.
These are a few of the products I have tried and recommend. However, remember that there are no magic pills or powders that will replace good-old well-balanced nutrition and a lot of hard work.
But if taken properly and often (you can't take it just when you remember to, it needs to be consistent to be effective) I feel supplements like protein, creatine, and glutamine can allow you to reach your fitness goals much faster and more effectively than be not taking them.
